Border control of motorists
(based on materials from Rajavartiolaitos)
Registration at the border control site
Express modules for passenger traffic have been put into operation at the Finnish international road checkpoints Nuijamaa, Vaalimaa and Imatra. These zones are intended for persons traveling across the border in a car and not having declared goods when entering or leaving Finland. Finnish border guards working in the new modules, along with border clearance, put stamps on your “invoice” checks.
During border control, passengers and drivers do not need to get out of the car unless border guards or customs officers specifically indicate.
We are approaching control
Before border control, prepare all documents: travel documents (passport and visa), personal insurance policy for each traveler, driver’s license, registration certificate and car insurance policy (“green card”), hotel reservations, air and other onward tickets, invitations. When approaching the site, watch for traffic lights and follow the signs. If the green arrow is lit above the strip, this means that the corridor is open.
Choose an open lane and drive to the window. Stay in the lane you have chosen; crossing the solid line is prohibited. Turn off the engine and present the entire package of documents prepared in advance to the inspector at once. Invoice checks should be inserted between the pages of the passport whose owner made the purchase.
Also open the rear side window so that the border guard can see the entire interior of the car.
During control
During border clearance, the driver and passengers can generally remain in the car. You can exit it if you are unable to pass documents through the front side window, or if a government official specifically asks you to disembark. Each person must, if necessary, be able to explain to the border guard the purpose of his trip and the conditions of his stay in the country.
At checkpoints in Finland, upon entry into the country, fingerprints are checked for passengers who have a Schengen visa type “VIS” with fingerprint data. Upon leaving the country, fingerprints are read selectively. For passengers in passenger cars, the procedure is carried out using a small wireless device, which the border guard transmits into the car interior. First, the driver's fingerprints are compared, followed by the passengers' fingerprints. The index finger of the right hand is placed on the scanning plane of the scanner. The main thing here is to follow the instructions of the border guard.
Fingerprints are not checked for children under 12 years of age, members of official delegations and persons who are physically unable to undergo fingerprinting.
Border officials may also take the car or passengers for a more thorough inspection. Such measures are taken quite often, and this does not mean that passengers are suspected of any illegal activity.
