The length of the customs border in the area of ​​activity of the Grodno regional customs is 556 kilometers. In fact, together with all terminals, customs clearance points and all infrastructure, it covers the western part of the Grodno region and the city of Grodno. And if most of us have a five-day working week, as well as holidays and weekends, then the border works 24/7. Hundreds of customs officers work here around the clock, on weekdays and holidays. Their responsibility is not limited to checkpoints, as many believe. Their responsibilities include not only declaring phones and televisions. What else?

Journalists from Grodno Pravda went to the Privalka checkpoint to take a look at the internal professional part of the customs work.

Grodno regional customs spoke about the reasons for the queues of trucks in the Lithuanian direction

October 22, Grodno / Corr. BELTA/. The synchronized and rhythmic work of the services of neighboring countries will help reduce queues in the Lithuanian direction. First Deputy Head of the Grodno Regional Customs Ivan Teleshinsky told reporters about this today, BELTA correspondent reports.

Since the weekend, there have been impressive queues of trucks entering Lithuania. For example, at the Kamenny Log checkpoint on the morning of October 22, about 350 heavy trucks were waiting to enter, and there were queues of 200 cars at Privalka and Benyakoney.

The appearance of queues is not least associated with the choice of such a route by the carriers themselves. The fact is that more fuel can be supplied to the Lithuanian direction than, for example, to the Polish one. In addition, there is an increase in trade flow and, accordingly, an increase in the number of freight transport. Almost 90 million tons of cargo have been moved through the checkpoints of the Grodno regional customs since the beginning of the year.

Over the past weekend, customs officers cleared over 11 thousand cars, more than 3.7 thousand trucks, and almost 400 buses in the Lithuanian direction. “The number of vehicles can be large. The infrastructure of our checkpoints allows. But this requires constant synchronous and rhythmic work of the services of neighboring states,” noted Ivan Teleshinsky. One of the reasons for the queues in the Lithuanian direction is the insufficient number of vehicles accepted by the neighboring side. The problem is known; Lithuanian customs officers recently informed their Belarusian colleagues that they were taking measures aimed at speeding up transport clearance and increasing throughput.

The line of trucks at the Privalka checkpoint near Grodno stretched for several kilometers. The Belarusian side registers about 200 heavy vehicles here per shift. There are opportunities to increase this number, but the Lithuanian side cannot yet accept more.

About 25% of the cars forming the queue have already passed all types of control on the Belarusian side; they are waiting at the checkpoint to enter Lithuania. On average 3 hours 20 minutes.

"How does this happen? We are entering the checkpoint. Registration on the Belarusian side takes a few minutes. There are no complaints here, it would seem that we can move on, but Lithuania does not accept cars. A traffic jam is forming,” says truck driver Evgeniy, who stood in line at the Privalka checkpoint for about a day.

“I am carrying a perishable product. I entered the checkpoint on the Belarusian side without a queue. I registered in ten minutes and have been waiting for the third hour to be received on the Lithuanian side,” commented the carrier from Poland Joseph, commenting on the situation. He emphasizes that in this way he loses not only time, but also money.

By the way, last weekend there were queues in the Latvian direction. They were associated with a software failure on the adjacent side. Now its functionality has been restored and the situation is returning to normal.

Queues on the Lithuanian and Latvian routes, as noted by the Grodno regional customs office, will significantly decrease over the next 24 hours. -0-

Customs officer is a multifaceted profession

– A customs officer must have extensive knowledge. After all, when performing customs operations, you need to master not only your business, but also knowledge from various fields: economics, politics, law, psychology, accounting, geography... We are constantly on the move in relation to a changing world. “Nobody and nothing stands still,” says Sergei Matveev, head of the Privalka customs post.

To those who cross the border, it may seem that there are always the same people and the same procedures - according to a long-established schedule. In fact, the mechanism is much more complex; it takes into account dozens of variables. Work processes are subject to clear algorithms: every day, customs officers are assigned electronically to work places. This means that every day they perform different operations: declaring and releasing goods, weighing cargo, inspecting cars...

What do we know about the profession of a customs officer? This is a government employee who controls the process of crossing the border of people, vehicles and goods, thereby protecting the economic security of our country. This is the official definition. This is what those in office say.

– I like the diversity and personal involvement in protecting the economic interests, security and integrity of our state. As in any field, there are, of course, difficulties. But this is not boring routine work. People, carriers, companies, types of goods and cargo, senders and recipients. I am participating in something large-scale, a lot depends on me not only in this post, but even thousands of kilometers from here.
