I’m writing a note, maybe it will be useful for those crossing the Russia-Latvia border for the first time. I myself have traveled several times only through Russia-Finland border crossings and found myself on the border with Latvia for the first time.

Duration: 06/28/2012 Location: Ubylinka-Grebnevo border crossing.

A couple of kilometers before the border we filled up a full tank at the Lukoilov gas station. Near the border there are two or three more gas stations. We arrived at the border and customs post with the romantic name Ubylinka. We arrived at the barrier. We stand and wait. We don't know what's next. We are used to the fact that at the Russian-Finnish border all the inspectors are always standing on the street, you open the window at the car, show your passports, and you only have to go out to passport control. The guy in the booth looked at us for a few minutes, then came out and said that we need to pay for the toll road - 300 rubles. That is, in fact, entry to the border is paid. We paid, the barrier opened, we moved on. Another barrier booth, then I go out, the border guard looks at the passports. I’m joking, I say that everywhere has its own rules, there’s no way to adapt, previously we only traveled through Finland. He also jokes in response, in Russia the firing squad has been abolished, freedom, no big deal. He says it’s more complicated here than on the Finnish border. We go further to customs. The customs officers approached, looked, and then drove up to the passport control booth. The two of us got out of the car to issue passports, as is customary at the Russian-Finnish border, first the driver, then the passenger. And then the border guard says that the passenger must sit in the car, and the driver must also show his passport along with his own. Interesting, but that's the way it is. In fact, everyone, both customs officers and border guards, are friendly. They explained and suggested what to do next. Everyone’s faces and eyes are calm, there is no vanity. It feels like the rhythm of life here is calmer and more measured, unlike St. Petersburg. The girl on duty with a stick and a flag, regulating traffic, wished us a good trip and suggested we stop at Duty Free. Let's go. The door is closed. We turned around - a woman was running from the border post and shouting to us: I’ll open it now, I’ll be quick, wait. Standard dutik, alcohol, perfume, sweets. We bought a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates. In general, we passed the Russian side in about 20 minutes. There is one feature on the Russian side of this border that you need to know. Russian cars travel in both directions along a separate corridor. That is, if there are 10 cars ahead with Latvian license plates, there is no need to follow them, you just need to go around them and stand in front of them, go to the booth, they will give you a license plate and let you through.

Well, goodbye Russia - forward to Latvia. We approach another barrier, but this time on Latvian territory. He showed his passports at the window and in return received a coupon with a number and two declarations. In the declaration you indicate the amount of gasoline in the tank, the alcohol and cigarettes carried. For a long time I could not understand what an ID was until I realized that I needed to write the passport number. Let's move on to the post. There are two cars in front of us, one is being inspected, one is waiting. Out of habit, I got out of the car and headed to the post to stamp passports, but the experienced truck drivers standing nearby shouted - stop, go get into the car, otherwise it will be worse when they call me. The Latvians were in no hurry. The cars were inspected strictly sequentially. A mass of people in the uniform of Latvian border guards and customs officers moved from building to building, leaving every 10 minutes for a smoke break. It took at least 15 minutes to design each car. Finns are jet planes compared to these guys. Our turn has come. We've arrived. The border guard and customs officer came out. We opened all the doors and trunk. The car was completely inspected. They asked for a green card, they even asked for a driver’s license. Having taken the declarations and coupons, green cards and passports, the border guard went with them to the trailer. And I had the opportunity to talk for 10-15 minutes with a Russian guy - a Latvian customs officer. He asked where we were going, I wondered why it was taking so long. The boy was quite friendly and talkative, complained about the authorities from Riga, who came up with such regulations introduced to combat the transport of gasoline and cigarettes from Russia. A computer program has been introduced at the border and it fully tracks the movement of all vehicles. But for this, for a very long time, data about all those passing through, especially those going through the checkpoint for the first time, is entered into the computer. After 15-20 minutes, they finally gave us our stamped passports and we entered the European Union. I just thought that while the boy and I were mocking our lives for 10 minutes, with the normal organization of the border crossing, he could have inspected the cars that were still standing in line behind us. And the line slowly grew and there were already five cars behind us. Well, okay, to a foreign monastery with its own charter... In total, it took about 50 minutes to get to the Latvian side of the border (to inspect three cars!?)
