The term "safety glass" refers only to the types of glass described below and does not apply to safety glass, such as ordinary wired glass and absorbent glass (for example, light-protective or x-ray-proof glass).
(A) Strengthened (tempered) safety glass.
This type includes:
1) Glass obtained by repeated heating in parts until the moment when they, having softened, have not yet lost their original shape. The glass is then quickly cooled using an appropriate method (thermal tempered glass).
2) Glass in which the strength, durability and ductility are significantly increased due to complex physico-chemical processing (for example, ion exchange), which can entail changes in the surface structure of the glass (known as “chemically tempered glass”).
This type of glass cannot be processed after production due to the internal stress generated during the tempering process, and hence it is produced immediately in the required shape and size.
(B) Laminated safety glass
This type of safety glass, commonly known as laminated glass, has a complex structure, with one or more layers of plastic between two or more panes of glass. The plastic usually consists of sheets of cellulose acetate, vinyl or acryloids. Complete adhesion occurs through significant heat and the application of high pressure, sometimes after spraying a special adhesive onto the inner surfaces of the glass plates. Another way is to form a layer of pla
static mass directly on the glass plates, then the glass plates are glued together after heating and pressing.
A characteristic feature of tempered safety glass is that, upon a sharp impact, it breaks into small pieces without sharp edges or even shatters, thereby reducing the risk of injury from flying glass pieces. Laminated safety glass will usually crack without splintering, but if the impact is strong enough to cause the glass to break, the flying pieces will not be large enough to cause serious injury. If necessary, wire mesh can be inserted into the laminated glass and the intermediate plastic layers can be painted.
These qualities make it possible to use the mentioned types of glass for the manufacture of windshields and car windows, doors, ship windows, safety glasses for workers and drivers, gas masks and driver's helmets. A special type of laminated glass is bulletproof glass.
This heading does not distinguish between unshaped glass and glass which has been shaped (for example, concave glass).
However, concave glass plates having the character of watch glasses or sunglasses are classified in heading 7015. Safety glass forming part of other articles and therefore in the form of parts of machines and appliances is classified with those machines and appliances; Also, spectacles with safety glass lenses are classified in heading 90.04.
Multi-wall insulating glass, for example, consisting of two glass plates with an intermediate layer of fiberglass, is classified in heading 70.08.
Products made of toughened (tempered) glass and glass-ceramics, in addition to those mentioned above, are classified on a case-by-case basis according to their properties (for example, tempered glass tumblers, borosilicate bakeware, glass-ceramic plates in heading 7013).
Plastics that replace safety glass are classified depending on their constituent substance (group).
