It's unusually quiet here today. Only a stream of trucks is actively moving in both directions, and cars stand behind the barrier, waiting for citizens who cross the Russian-Kazakh border on foot.

Masks, gloves, antiseptic... These protective equipment have become part of the life of every resident of the country, and the sentries of the Motherland are no exception. At the border, even during the state of emergency, work did not stop for a minute.

According to Darizhan Abilov, deputy head of the Kairak Automobile border control department, a quarantine regime was introduced at the post on March 16, 2020.

– At first it was not easy, there were queues of cars between the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan... But we tried to quickly respond to all situations. Soon people began to carefully study the regulations. Now the work is fully regulated, there is a procedure for crossing the border,” says Captain Abilov. – For example, persons traveling to Russia for treatment or training, going to the funeral of family members and close relatives, etc. can pass through the border post. However, before setting off, citizens need to collect the necessary documents.

The approach to security at the checkpoint is serious. Along with the border guards, there are medical workers on duty at the post, who do not let a single person pass by. They inquire about their well-being, measure their body temperature with a non-contact thermometer, and also check for a certificate of passing a PCR test.

– If a foreigner does not have a document confirming that he is not infected with coronavirus, then we send him back. But we check Kazakh truck drivers ourselves without test results. Fortunately, now everyone who has been trained does not come to the border without certificates,” says paramedic of the Karabalyk Central District Hospital Kairbek Amangeldy.

Passport control officers never get bored either. They take the “blows” of people in a bad mood and easily identify those who are trying to cross the border with a fake passport.

According to captain Darizhan Abilov, border guards are self-taught psychologists. Over the years, their skills improve. They can identify the offender by his gaze, facial expressions, and gestures.

“For example, someone who wants to cross the border with a fake document gets very nervous, sweats, talks a lot, or, on the contrary, remains silent and falls into a stupor,” says the interlocutor.

In 2021, three cases of forged documents were registered on the account of warrant officer Alexander Kiyan. Some wanted to cross the border with their brother’s passport, others with a fake driver’s license.

– If a person does not violate anything, then he behaves calmly, he has no fear. The offender presents himself with behavior that is unusual for him in ordinary life. We all notice this,” says Alexander Kiyan.

Service dogs replace each other at the post. Maya, Naiza, Roya, Kama... Belgian Shepherds, Labradors. All of them came from the Almaty canine kennel. Each four-legged animal has its own specific work.

– In fact, the dogs are not looking for drugs, explosives, or weapons. They are looking for a toy that they have been fond of since childhood. This is where their training begins in the nursery, and then in the canine center,” says canine handler, junior sergeant Pavel Faskhudinov. – If the dog is aimed at searching for narcotic substances, then the toys smell of marijuana, hashish, heroin, etc. Thus, the dog, having entered the service, searches for familiar smells with great diligence. When she senses what she is looking for, she sits down or begins to rush around this place. Afterwards, we reward the dogs with their favorite toys, play with them and praise them. They are accustomed to affection, but they also do their work conscientiously.

By the way, in 2021, more than 360 thousand cars were allowed through the Kairak automobile checkpoint. For comparison: in 2019 there were about 620 thousand. There were also arrests. Last year, employees and their four-legged assistants uncovered 21 cases of attempts to smuggle drugs across the border, and 26 cases of weapons. What methods do lawbreakers resort to... Counterfeit products were hidden in subwoofers, engines, and even food products. At the same time, the coordinated actions of the border guards replenished the state budget by more than one billion tenge.

The rules for importing alcohol are also changing, ITAR-TASS clarifies. Starting from July 1, 2010, you can cross the border with 5 liters of alcohol (previously 10 liters), while the volume of imported duty-free alcohol has increased from two to three liters. Is it possible to enter Kazakhstan from Russia by car now?

It is now possible for a Russian citizen to enter Kazakhstan from Russia by car, but only if there are grounds and supporting documents.

You won’t be allowed into Kazakhstan by car just like that, without a reason.

A trip to visit friends or distant relatives is not a reason for crossing the land border of Kazakhstan, so such a visit should be postponed until restrictions are lifted.

How can a Russian citizen get from Russia to Kazakhstan now?

A Russian citizen can enter Kazakhstan from Russia in two ways: by air or by crossing the land border.

At the same time, there are no restrictions when entering Kazakhstan by air:

• there is no need to prove the reasons for entry into Kazakhstan and present copies of documents confirming these reasons, that is, for example, you can go to visit friends and distant relatives;
• the 90-day restriction period for re-visiting Kazakhstan does not apply, that is, if you have money and the desire to fly to Kazakhstan, a Russian citizen can fly to Kazakhstan at least every day.

As for crossing the land border, grounds and supporting documents are required to enter Kazakhstan.

It is also important to remember that when entering Kazakhstan by any means of transport, a PCR test for coronavirus is required for Russian citizens, without which a foreigner will not be allowed into the territory of this country.
